Knowing what the test looks like takes some of the fear out of it. How long is it, and what does it feel like to sit?

Here is the format the NDAEB describes.

Short answer

The NDAEB Theory Exam is computer-based: 200 multiple choice questions, in English or French.

You have a maximum of four hours and no scheduled break. Spread evenly, that's 72 seconds a question.

The passing score isn't one fixed number. The handbook says it generally falls in the low to mid 60s percent, depending on the test paper.

What the test looks like

It's computer-based and made up of 200 multiple choice questions. You can take it in either French or English.

The handbook says many of the questions are case based.

You get an online notepad on the exam. Paper, pens and pencils are not permitted.

Four hours, no scheduled break

You're allowed a maximum of four hours to finish, and there are no scheduled breaks during the sitting.

If you need the washroom or a drink, you leave at the direction of the test centre facilitator, and your clock keeps running. Nobody adds the time back.

Four hours across 200 questions works out to 72 seconds per question if you spread the time evenly.

The passing score

The handbook doesn't give one number. It says the passing score will vary, generally falling between the low and mid 60s percent, depending on the questions on each test paper. Less difficult forms of the exam tend to have higher passing scores.

So the pass mark varies from one test paper to another. The range describes where it generally falls, not a score to aim for.

Know the length, the lack of a scheduled break and the passing score, then practise to that format.

If anything has changed, the NDAEB site is the place to confirm it.
