How much does the NDAEB Theory Exam cost?

Planning your NDAEB budget? The exam fee is only part of the picture.
Here is what the published fee schedule includes and what you can and cannot get back.
Short answer
The NDAEB Theory Exam costs $730, in Canadian dollars. That is a $100 application fee plus a $630 examination fee.
A rewrite costs the same $730. Once you've sat the exam, the fee is not refunded whether you pass or fail.
Withdrawing costs more the closer you get to the exam. After the application deadline, and 15 days or more before the first day of the sitting, it is the $100 plus a $210 withdrawal fee. Inside 14 days, all fees are forfeited.
What the $730 is made of
The NDAEB's Theory Exam Candidate Handbook gives one number, $730.00, for initial or rewrite attempts, payable in Canadian dollars only. The NDAEB's fee schedule breaks it into two parts.
| Part | Amount (CAD) |
|---|---|
| Application fee (non-refundable) | $100 |
| Examination fee | $630 |
| Total | $730 |
A rewrite is priced the same way: a $100 application fee and a $630 examination fee. If you needed two sittings, you'd be paying $1,460 in total.
Other fees on the schedule
These are listed on the fee schedule separately from the $730.
| Fee | Amount (CAD) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Practice examination | $75 | |
| Appeal | $210 | Includes a $50 processing fee. If the appeal is granted, all $210 is refunded. If there are no grounds, $160 is refunded |
| Remedial (fourth) attempt request | $50 | Non-refundable. You can ask after a third unsuccessful attempt, with a remediation plan the NDAEB approves |
What withdrawing costs
You can withdraw at any time, but the fees depend on when the NDAEB receives your online Withdrawal Request Form. The withdrawal fee is deducted from your exam payment, and the rest goes back to the credit card you paid with, usually within 14 business days.
| When the NDAEB receives your request | What it costs you |
|---|---|
| Before the application deadline | The $100 application and credit card processing fees |
| After the deadline, 15 days or more before the first day of the sitting | The $100 plus a $210 withdrawal fee |
| 14 days or less before the first day of the sitting | Full fees, not refundable |
| Serious medical or unanticipated exceptional circumstances, if the NDAEB approves | The $100 and card processing fees. Supporting documents are required |
What you don't get back
- After you finish the exam, the full Theory Exam fee is non-refundable. That's true if you pass and if you fail.
- The $100 application fee and the credit card processing fees are not refunded on any withdrawal, whatever the reason. The handbook also says a non-refundable card processing fee is applied when you pay, without giving an amount.
- If you're registered and don't show up, you're assessed the full examination fee. The handbook doesn't say whether that means the $630 or the whole $730. If you couldn't attend for medical or serious personal reasons, your fees may be reimbursed or you may be moved to the next session at no charge. You need a recent letter from a physician or other regulated professional, sent within 30 days after the exam.
If you might need a different date, transferring to another sitting in the same calendar year carries no financial penalty when you ask before the application deadline. The [dates guide](/ndaeb/theory-exam-dates) has the details.
